If you need a scale that is resistant to water and dust, make sure it is IP-rated. Read the full blog post on this topic here.
An IP rating, or Ingress Protection rating, indicates how well a scale is sealed against dust, water, and other foreign objects.
Scales with the Highest Level of Protection
All IP-rated scales available from us are protected to a level that covers solid objects and liquids, with a liquid protection rating between 5 and 8. This means the scales are dustproof and can withstand water splashing from all directions without affecting their functionality.
The highest level of dust protection is indicated by a “6” as the first digit in the IP rating, referred to as IP6X. Our scales fall under classifications IP65, IP66, IP67, and IP68, which represent the maximum protection levels. No dust or water can penetrate the scale, making an IP65–IP68 rated scale ideal for environments where it may be exposed to large amounts of dust or water.
Why Should My Scale Be IP-Rated?
Your scale should be IP-rated because it ensures full functionality even when exposed to rain, moisture, or dust. The IP rating system was established for a wide range of electrical equipment, including scales, to provide a standardized measure of an appliance’s resistance and suitability for harsh environments.
The official name of the IP rating is Ingress Protection Rating, also known as the enclosure rating. The classification is divided into two digits: the first digit indicates protection against solid objects (such as a finger), and the second digit indicates protection against liquids (such as water). For example, a device with an IP20 rating is protected at level 2 out of 6 against solid objects but offers no protection against water or other liquids.
This is what we recommend.
At the top end of protection, the KERN BID Floor Scale is designed for industrial environments and comes with an IP67 rating. This means the scale is dustproof and can withstand temporary immersion in water. Its weighing platform is non-slip, and with features such as limit weighing and counting, you can set upper and lower limits or use the scale to count selected components. It is important to note, however, that the display for this scale does not share the same IP rating or water tolerance, which is true for several scales, so it’s essential to check the rating of both the scale and any separate display units.
In our product range, you will find even more IP-rated scales, ensuring optimal performance even in tough environments. If you have any further questions, you are always welcome to contact us.
